Discover what you want, what you need and what your “inside” voice is like by doing this ONE thing!

I can not tell you how many times I have had conversations with people (ok, mainly women) who actually are not sure about what they want, need or even enjoy doing.

Somewhere along the way, we seem to have lost pieces of ourselves. The space that was once there for hobbies like reading, going to the movies and drawing/painting/creating have been replaced with the everyday mundane stuff. (The conversation in our head goes like this- “oh, I will get around to reading/movies/creating once I have finished with the washing/dishes/extra work stuff.” OR “Oh my goodness, where did the time go, I feel like I didn’t get anything done today. I will definitely read/movie/create tomorrow…”) Yeah right, that never happens. AND, have you noticed how we can rationalise it by saying how much better we feel once said jobs are done…. don’t worry about the fact that within a 24 hour day, you didn’t manage a measly 30 minutes of an activity you love! Oh and don’t get me started on the social life of our children!

Something that I know to be true for me and in practise with my clients is that it is really easy to put yourself last, get distracted and then venture way off track. We start out with amazing intentions but unless we create structure around how we will action the things… it falls away, just like everything else you have tried.

Another thing that I have noticed is that, due to our increasing list of commitments, we have lost sight of what we even like to do. (I distinctly remember a time when I had a small break from my kids and I literally didn’t know what to do with myself. I found myself wandering the toy section in target….)

Thats where this one tool will change the way you live.

It super simple, its free and it is a total game changer.

There are no rules to how you journal, it doesn’t have to look pretty, you don’t need a special book, hell, you don’t even need a book! Journaling is more about getting the thoughts out of your head and on paper/memo/video (whatever it looks like for you.)

There are certain styles that I loosely follow, but I like to mix it up as I personally find really firm structure to be a little stifling.

Here are the styles that I use-

1- Conscious flow.

This is where I simply write whatever comes into my head. I may be processing an event or conversation/interaction. I may be stuck in a bit of a loop around something that I did or something that happened. Just grab a pen and write without thinking and see what happens.

2- Stories versus truth.

I take a page and draw a line down the middle. On one side I write the story that I have been telling myself (I have been a bad friend/I failed at xyz/I cant do ____/who do I think i am to___). Then on the other side of the page I write the truth, or what a friend would tell me from their perspective.

One side is what I have made up to be true and the other side is more factual.

3- Journal prompts.

This is where we select a topic to write about and discover the answer as we put pen to paper.

The trick to successful journaling is consistent practise and NO judgement, simply letting the pen flow and see what comes up. This is how we can uncover what is really going on for us and create an awareness around the way that we behave.

Behaviour is simply a symptom of a deeper problem. We behave a certain way due to our past experiences, the way we grew up or trauma, then we sculpt out a way of living. When we become aware of why we behave in a certain way, we can change our outcome. Awareness is key!

You see, we get so stuck in our heads sometimes and since we are the only ones who hear our inside voice, we have no measuring stick. We just assume that everyone has a bitchy perfectionist in their head, criticising everything that they do.

Join me for a 5 day writing challenge and lets play with this and see what comes up.

Extra tips and tricks!

-Start small, don’t expect to write pages and pages. Just a few lines is a great start.

-If you don’t want to keep your pages….. burn them. I don’t know how many times I have felt incredible lightness after I have burned the pages that I have literally spewed forward!!! It began as not wanting to hold onto what I had written about, then it became a bit of a thing. Especially when I use the ho’oponopono method and write a letter involving another person, I love to burn that.

-Find a time that works for you! Look, Im an early riser, so mornings are great for me. If you find time in the evenings, thats perfect, or even a little chunk of time in the day. There are no rules here!

-Make it a part of the day that you enjoy. Make a cuppa, sit in a place that sparks joy, comfort or quiet. Making this a regular practise that gives you a sense of enjoyment will help keep the consistency going.

I can not wait to hear how you go with this. During the week I will be posting some journal prompts on social media. I would love to hear what comes up for you, please get in contact, you can find the links below.
